This set of 20 First Day Covers featuring twenty different historically significant American flags was issued in 2000. The flags represented are: the Sons of Liberty Flag (1775—3 horizontal stripes), the New England Flag (1775—with New England pine), the Forster Flag (1775—white stripes on captured British flag), the Continental Colors (1776—British Union Jack on our first national flag), the Francis Hopkinson Flag (1777—the first Stars and Stripes), the Brandywine Flag (1777—carried at the Battle of Brandywine), the John Paul Jones Flag (1779—hoisted in victory at sea), the Pierre L'Enfant Flag (1783—created by the architect of our nation's capital), the Indian Peace Flag (1803—presented to friendly Indian nations), the Easton Flag (1814—presented by citizens of Easton, PA to their Regiment of Volunteers), the Star-Spangled Banner (1814—under British fire in the War of 1812 and inspired our national anthem), the Bennington Flag (c.1820—possibly celebrated 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence), the Great Star Flag (1837--star for each state in a star pattern), the 29-Star Flag (1847--diamond patterned garrison flag, 29th star for Iowa), the Fort Sumter Flag (1861—flew over Charleston's Fort Sumter when Civil War began), the Centennial Flag 1876—unofficial flag reflecting American patriotic spirit), the 38-Star Flag (1877—unusual pattern includes star for Colorado), the Peace Flag (1891—symbolized dedication to world peace), the 48-Star Flag (1912—standardized flag official from 1912 to 1959), and the 50-Star Flag (1960—our current Stars and Stripes).
